Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) is the national flag carrier of the Republic of Azerbaijan. This website will take a deeper look into the aviation of the “land of fire”, with a special focus on the national flag carrier and its predecessor. We will share and value the history and memories of this truly wonderful airline.

HISTORY

The first airline of Azerbaijan was a company organized according to the Dobrolyot model. In 1925 it became a joint Georgian-Azerbaijani venture as a united Zakavia society. In 1929, Zakavia, together with similar organizations in the Soviet republics, was merged into Dobrolyot USSR.

FLEET

With the foundation of AZAL, the airline inherited most of the Soviet fleet
of Aeroflot’s Azerbaijan division. The fleet was supplimented with early Boeing models. The currently AZAL fleet consists of Airbus aircraft, from the popular Airbus A320 to the last flying example of the Airbus A340-500!

NETWORK

While part of the Aeroflot’s Azerbaijan division, the airline operated only domestic flights within the USSR. Currently, AZAL operates from its base at Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport to destinations across Asia, the CIS, Europe and the United States of America.

NOTE: This website is still in the process of being built. Many sections do not work yet, some are half done and some work properly, as do more and more of the pages. Remember, AZAL wasn’t built in a day either!
